City of Zagreb Museum: Let's Go to Sljeme Together!
The Zagreb City Museum, whose permanent display is a true treasure chest of the history and present of the city, is taking us to Sljeme on Zagreb Mountain in its new exhibition.
A new exhibition entitled Let's Go to Sljeme! Tales from Zagreb Mountain is open to visitors at the Zagreb City Museum until 20 September. It is taking us to the popular excursion site and presenting its recreational and social activities with emphasis on mountaineering. Medvednica and Zagreb Mountain are synonyms and refer to the citizens’ favourite mountain whose summit is called Sljeme. It is an area with a long history of sports and recreation which is presented at the museum based on documents and historical insights but also emotional stories of mountaineers and excursionists. Special attention is given to the beginning and development of organised mountaineering, establishment of mountaineering societies, worthy persons, mountaineering infrastructure and similar topics. Since the exhibition is based on individual testimonies, in addition to archival, librarian and museological holdings, numerous collaborators were involved in its preparation. Their stories and donated objects enhance the personal impression of the time, space and social context.
The exhibition Let's Go to Sljeme! Tales from Zagreb Mountain is the most recent of the occasional exhibitions that take place at the Zagreb City Museum, which will celebrate 120 years since its foundation next year. In addition to occasional exhibitions, the Museum has a permanent display. The current one dates back to 1997 and it is a chronological portrait of a multi-layered and dynamic history of Zagreb, shown in 45 thematic units.
