Important Anniversary: 180 Years of Croatian Natural History Museum

The Croatian Natural History Museum, located in the historical Amadeo Theatre in the Upper Town in Zagreb, is celebrating an important anniversary this year, 180 years since its foundation. It is a grand jubilee which will be celebrated from 7 to 9 December with the congress “180 Years of Dedication to Natural History Heritage – A Museum for the Future”. The congress will bring together museum professionals, scientists, naturalists, nature conservation experts, and representatives of cultural and scientific institutions whose goal is to evaluate achievements, exchange experience and research results and discuss the role of natural history museums in the future.

The Croatian Natural History Museum is the leading national institution for the collection, research, and interpretation of the natural history heritage of Croatia. The Museum’s collections, whose starting point was the National Museum established in 1846, contain around 1.5 million items.

This museum was reopened in October, 2024 after a thorough three-year renovation, which led to the increase of the museum’s surface from 860 to 3600 square metres. It also received new exhibition space, cutting-edge technology, laboratory and souvenir shop. Visitors are attracted by its multimedia solutions and interactive content and the manner in which it presents its comprehensive holdings. It makes the museum a worthy rival to the most modern European museums of its type.

The museum has also received a modern area to hold temporary exhibitions, lectures, workshops and other educational programmes and its capacity for scientific research has been strengthened.
