Zagreb Funicular: the Symbol of the City is Back!

After a thorough renovation, the Zagreb funicular, a symbol of the city and protected cultural heritage, continues its mission of connecting the Lower and the Upper Town in a romantic ride.

There are several ways in which to reach the historical Upper Town from the busy Lower Town in Zagreb, but certainly none is more romantic than taking the funicular. After a thorough renovation, which lasted a bit longer than a year, one of the symbols of Zagreb will continue its historical mission of transferring passengers on this short but attractive ride.

The Zagreb funicular was built in 1890 and it is the oldest mean of public transport in Zagreb. It has just undergone a thorough and comprehensive renovation for the first time after 50 years.

The stations in the Lower and the Upper Town were renovated as well as the entire tracks and viaduct, which required new 66-meter-long tracks and construction works. A new operating system was installed, as well as a new braking system, and now the funicular is safer and more reliable. There are also new booths with heating and cooling system, but their outward appearance stayed the same to continue tradition and historical identity. A lot of thought was given to increasing accessibility to disabled persons during the renovation, so now access and transport as well as finding your way is made easier with the use of tactile pathways.

After a long break, citizens and visitors of the city can now take their favourite Zagreb funicular to reach the historical Upper Town, pay a visit to its museums and galleries and enjoy the romantic Upper Town ambience.
