Themed City Walks: Get to Know Your City
A city is made of streets and houses, but even more it is made of its people and stories about them. Owing to the project “Get to Know Your City”, these stories will become more familiar, interesting and even more precious.
“Get to Know Your City” is the title of the project by the Zagreb Tourist Board which offers free city tours on the weekends between 5 and 27 September in as many as 31 time slots. This year’s programme consists of five different tours in Croatian that guide visitors through the history of the city, introducing them to its historical figures, legends and lesser-known city stories. A particularly important part of the programme are two interactive tours intended for children aged 6 to 11 and their families.
“Zagreb can be discovered over and over again, regardless of how long we have been living in it. This is the idea behind the project ‘Get to Know Your City’ the aim of which is to familiarise our fellow citizens with lesser-known stories, persons and places that make up the identity of Zagreb” said the director of Zagreb Tourist Board, Martina Bienenfed. She stated that citizens are an important part of the identity of Zagreb and its best promotors.
“In the Shade of the Facades of the Upper Town” is a tour with a costumed guide who brings life to the stories about Zagreb and tells intriguing and humorous tales. “Stories from Ancient Past about the Old Zagreb” is a themed tour about the famous Mažuranić family and the mark it has left in Zagreb. On the occasion of the 145th anniversary of the death of August Šenoa, one of the most important Croatian writers and chroniclers of Zagreb, a tour entitled “The Son of Zagreb” has been designed. Interactive tour for children “Zagorka’s Key to Secrets” is intended for children aged 6 to 11, and it is led by, believe it or not, writer Marija Jurić Zagorka herself speaking in the first person. Interactive tour “Zagreb Marry-go-around” is intended for children of the same age. It allows children to discover the most important sights and a rich history of Zagreb in an entertaining way.
Participation in all tours is free of charge but a prior booking is necessary.
