60th Edition of International Folklore Festival in Zagreb: An Important Role in Preserving Traditional Culture

For as many as six decades, the International Folklore Festival turns streets of Zagreb in July in a stage full of traditional songs and dances but also an important guardian of heritage.

From 15 to 19 July, streets and squares of Zagreb will come alive with the International Folklore Festival. The jubilee, sixtieth edition of this renowned event is held under the motto Heritage Resilience, which refers to preserving this and other folklore festivals and at the same time traditional culture.

The grand jubilee of the International Folklore Festival in Zagreb is also an opportunity to remember its history. This year it will welcome groups that participated in the first festival in 1966. Not only that, but also some individuals who took part in the procession in that first year will also join this year’s event.

In addition to cultural and artistic groups from throughout Croatia, groups from Slovenia, Argentina, the Czeck Republic, Italy, North Macedonia, the US, Serbia, Spain and Taiwan have been announced. Also, folklore associations of Croats from Argentina, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada and Serbia will participate. All of them will perform on stages on Gradec Plateau in the Upper Town, in Ban Josip Jelačić Square and the Music Pavilion in Zrinjevac Park and present traditional songs and dances of their regions.

In addition to these performances, there are numerous ethnographic exhibitions, concerts of contemporary interpretations of traditional music, scientific panel discussions and workshops taking place within the framework of the folklore festival.
