Highlander Medvednica: Hiking Challenges with a View of Zagreb
In the immediate surroundings of Zagreb, overlooking the city, the challenging paths of Highlander Medvednica await you, as well as interesting mingling which makes this experience unique.
The period between 6 and 8 June is written in special lettering and marked by expectations for all fans of mountaineering event Highlander Medvednica and those who are yet to become ones. The setting of this mountaineering challenge is the Medvednica Nature Park, located to the north of Zagreb, attractive due to its beauty and activities it offers. Its highest summit Sljeme (1033) is a popular excursion site of citizens of Zagreb which is visited in all seasons due to beautiful nature, natural, cultural and historical sights but also various catering facilities. Highlander Medvednica has two programmes, one-day Highlander Lyra on 7 June and a three-day Highlander Pegasus from 6 to 8 June.
The total length of Highlander Lyra, which was named after a musical instrument lyra symbolising balance and harmony, is 19.4 kilometres. Even though it is a one-day event and a shorter distance, organisers warn that it is physically demanding, and requires a decent level of fitness and preparation. The more demanding Highlander Pegasus was named after the constellation which in turn got its name from a winged horse Pegasus from Greek mythology. This route full of surprises is 56 kilometres long and hikers will complete it in three days of demanding hiking. Both challenges are accompanied by a rich programme and activities and pleasant socialising and entertainment.
It is interesting to note that Highlander hiking experience is a Croatian product. It started in Croatia and today it is a globally recognised event which takes place in some of the most famous mountains in more than twenty countries in the world.
