14th Festival of World Literature: Authors from Sixteen World Countries Are on Their Way

If you are a fan of literature or you are about to become one, this is the setting you will truly enjoy.

The Festival of World Literature, which in a way marks autumn season in culture, is an indispensable event for lovers of the written word. It will take place from 5 to 9 September. The festival was transferred to the CNT2, the recently opened second stage of the Croatian National Theatre and will take place from 5 to 10 PM. Fraktura bookstore and the Šira Gallery will be the hosting venues of additional events.

The fact that writers, translators, moderators and editors from sixteen different countries are about to attend this festival in Zagreb proves how popular it is. An informal topic of this year’s edition is displacement of individuals from community.

This year, the literary encounter, which gathers authors and book buffs, will start with a talk with Palestinian author living in Berlin, Adania Shibli, and finish with French literary celebrities Kamel Daoud, Neige Sinno and Édouard Louis. The audience will have a chance to meet Danielo Kehlmann, Philipp Blom, Annabelle Hirsch, Francesca Melandri, Oksana Zabuško, Stefan Hertmans and many other writers. All programmes with foreign visitors will be accompanied by simultaneous interpretation. Naturally, many Croatian and regional writers will participate in the Festival of World Literature as guests, such as Maša Kolanović, Monika Herceg, Snježana Banović, Želimir Periš, Igor Štiks and others. On 4 September, there will be an exhibition opening at the Šira Gallery, showcasing caricatures of Damir Karakaš accompanied by a conversation on his monography.

A special programme will be dedicated to the recently deceased writer Slavenka Drakulić, by presenting her book Zašto nisam naučila kuhati (Why I Never Learned How to Cook).

The already familiar programmes such as Unveiling, A Writer and Their Reader and Coffee with the Author will continue to take place in Fraktura bookstore. Literary matinees have been organised in collaboration with grammar and other schools in Zagreb, while the public talk Translating with style is organised in cooperation with the Croatian Literary Translators Association.
