All the Flavours of Zagreb: Recognisable, Local, Authentic and So Tasty!

Every visit to Zagreb is also an irresistible gastronomic journey which is now closer, more interesting and tastier than ever!

Zagreb and its surroundings are famous for excellent food whose flavours are based on tradition, local ingredients and offer of numerous catering venues in which tradition is combined with modern gastronomic trends. The project of the Zagreb Tourist Board entitled All the Flavours of Zagreb consisting of the digital platform Delicious Zagreb, gastronomic series Ana Cooks, Zagreb Loves and a series of informative and educational programmes will help visitors and all those planning their trips to recognise these qualities. The programmes are aimed at presenting and improving tourism offer.

“According to the data of the World Food Travel Association (WFTA), 53 per cent of travellers on vacation actively search for gastronomic experience, while 81 per cent of international tourists wish to explore local cuisine, which shows how much gastronomy influences the choice of destination” says Martina Bienenfeld, the Zagreb Tourist Board Director. She continues: “In line with these trends, Zagreb is developing a recognisable and varied gastronomic scene which combines authentic local flavours with modern international influences. By acknowledging global trends and local particularities in gastronomy, the Zagreb Tourist Board is strategically directing its activities towards strengthening recognisability of the city. Through partnerships and projects such as Delicious Zagreb, it seeks to additionally stress the variety of Zagreb’s culinary offer and spur innovation, professionalism and sustainable development within the local community.”

The digital platform Delicious Zagreb, which provides an overview of restaurants, bars, winemakers, pastry chefs and manufacturers of authentic products in Zagreb, takes you to explore the gastronomic world of Zagreb. Recommendations, themed tours and stories about local ingredients guide you through flavours shaping the contemporary gastronomic scene in Zagreb in an informative, interesting and skilful way. Suitable recipes of a renowned chef Vesna Miletić allow you to transfer part of these flavours into your everyday life. The gastronomic series Ana Cooks, Zagreb Loves by a famous chef, Ana Ugarković, also takes you to this exciting journey. She explores local ingredients, traditional recipes and modern interpretations of Zagreb’s cuisine. By stressing popular destinations in Zagreb, the author shows that “Zagreb cuisine is not only what is served but also a story about people, places and emotions behind every bite” in an interesting and inspirational way.

In this project, the Zagreb Tourist Board is also collaborating with British influencer Paul Bradbury. He familiarises international audience with authentic flavours and unique experience of Zagreb gastro scene with the help of his video stories.

An important part of Zagreb’s gastro world is also practical training for gastro professionals. It is interesting that in 2023 Zagreb was the setting where the first Michelin gastronomic guide Masterclass workshop outside of France was held. In late October this year, the third Masterclass workshop took place, held by chef Alain Weissgerber from Austrian two-star restaurant Taubenkobel.
