Open House Zagreb: Heritage for the Future

If it seems to you that the terms heritage and future in the architectural sense do not belong in the same sentence, the Open House Zagreb Festival invites you to find a creative answer together.

The 3rd edition of the Open House Zagreb Festival will take place from 17 to 19 October with a common topic of the Heritage for the Future. This is a continuation of the last year’s festival topic Revitalisation of architectural heritage which connected the past with what seems a contrary term of the future of architecture.

Experts and citizens of Zagreb will look into what happens when the static aspect of heritage is joined with the dynamism of new constructions. The festival invites them to explore buildings, public spaces and infrastructure which is the area of focus today as well as to think about modern architecture which will become heritage in not-so-distant future. Therefore, it is the organizer’s wish for architects to explore and create criteria of acquiring and conceptualisation of work which future generations will remember us by through this project.

The Open House Zagreb Festival was designed as a meeting point of citizens with architects, civil engineers, investors and facility owners and the two previous editions garnered a lot of interest of citizens and experts. The festival prompts thinking about values of the city and the role of citizens in their creation with a series of lectures, individual contacts with architects and construction experts as well as themed tours.

The Open House Zagreb is a part of the Open House Worldwide which has been focused for more than three decades on presenting urban landscapes. The first Open House Festival was held in 1992 in London and today Open House Worldwide network gathers around sixty major world cities such as Copenhagen, New York, Chicago, Osaka, Mexico City, Melbourne, Athens, Milan, Zurich, Basel, Barcelona, Madrid, Lisbon, Prague, Vienna and others.
