Zagreb Museum Weekend: Appeling Programme as an Invitation to a Culturally Rich Autumn

The first weekend in September will mark the start of the cultural autumn in Zagreb in the most wonderful way possible: by starting a new, appealing programme but also by creating a new tradition!

From 4 to 7 September, eleven museums, fourteen museum and gallery areas and several open public spaces in Zagreb send out a special invitation. They will open doors to visitors to display the existing or new exhibitions to which they will add numerous themed, educational and other activities. The first edition of the Zagreb Museum Weekend is connected to one special event which marked the past but also the present of Zagreb - the 175th anniversary of the unification of Gradec and Kaptol. They used to be separate units, but the unification allowed the single settlement to develop into a modern medieval city.

The exciting museum weekend will start on 4 September with an opening ceremony at the Nikola Tesla Technical Museum, a programme celebrating the Tesla coil and a concert of modern urban electronic music. Exhibitions and museums at all locations involved will be open to visitors from Friday to Sunday, 10 to 20 o’clock either for individual or guided tours, free of charge.

The Zagreb Museum Weekend will partly take place in the outdoors and create a special atmosphere in the city. One of the attractions will be light installation entitled Nostalgia for Light by Davor Sanvicenti at King Tomislav Square, one of the most beautiful squares in Zagreb. Around ten new cultural walking tours have been designed, which will present rich and interesting history of Zagreb, the most prominent outdoor art pieces, industrial heritage of Zagreb and its hidden parts as well as many secrets of certain city neighbourhoods to visitors. And as a respite from tours, if you wish to rest or meet persons with similar interests, there are city parks in which you will be able to attend themed lectures and watch films and shows, participate in discussions, quizzes and games as well as surprises.

The Museum Weekend is an exceptionally appealing programme and an announcement of an exciting Zagreb cultural autumn. It is also the start of a new tradition. With the ambience of a city with recognisable atmosphere which is slowly entering autumn but also living with new dynamics, increasing number of museums and galleries are expected to join the project. Also, with its activities and programme it is expected to become a recognisable part of a rich and attractive cultural scene of Zagreb.
