Growing Up with Music
Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra; Audrey Saint-Gil, conductor; Filip Vidović, narrator
The Growing Up with Music concert presents two contrasting but equally captivating works from the orchestral repertoire. Peter and the Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev is a universally recognized masterpiece, created specifically for young audiences. Through vivid musical storytelling, each character is presented with a different instrument, offering an interesting way to introduce young people to the orchestra and the expressive power of music. The second part of the program consists of the Georges Bizet's Symphony in C, an extraordinary piece that the composer created when he was just 17. Bright, elegant and full of youthful energy, the symphony reveals Bizet's early mastery of orchestral composition and contains several references and clear stylistic allusions to Charles Gounod, his mentor. The young composer likely envisioned it as an homage to his esteemed teacher, to whom he would later write: "You were the beginning of my artistic life. I come from you: you are the cause, I am the consequence.”
S. Prokofiev: Peter and the Wolf, symphonic fairy tale, Op. 67
